TEACHING
I started teaching construction in post-Katrina New Orleans, leading volunteers on renovations of historic homes. As a carpenter I learned how construction is a fundamental skill that anyone can pick up. When I went to graduate school for design I noticed how many students around me knew very little about how things are built. At the University of Georgia I co-taught a 'design build' elective course for students at the College of Environment + Design using a process of "learning by doing" as we explored construction through the lens of community projects. In Portland, I have participated in providing instruction opportunities to pre-apprenticeship and other workforce development programs, teaching construction with real-life shelter projects. Overall, my focus has been to merge community work with construction education.
